Why St George's?
St Georges College offers an exceptional standard of education with personal attention from highly trained teachers in small classes. It has a warm congenial atmosphere and gives the opportunity for every pupil to freely express their individuality in a disciplined environment to provide your child with an education for life.
The College aims to equip our young people to be able to take their place in society in a meaningful, informed and constructive way; this implies the ability to converse in a mature way with adults, to be able to speak to groups of people, to be able to think for themselves and have the ability to solve problems in a structured and rational manner. We also encourage them to become entrepreneurs and to seek opportunities for themselves in life.
We strive to make each child's education a happy and satisfying experience and relative to the needs and demands of the day. We have found that this is best delivered in a relaxed family atmosphere. Regular parents evenings are held each year, so that parents can see their child's teacher in each subject. We send full reports to parents during the year to give appropriate information on pupil achievement in every subject taken.
Education in South Africa is undergoing great change. The College faces these daunting challenges and the call for educational transformation with confidence. We will ensure that our standards will not be lowered as we marry what is good, tried and tested from the past with the modern developments and philosophy. We believe in a dynamic and ever improving system to equip our young people for the world into which they will be moving. The enrolment of the College caters for all groups in society living together in harmony developing an understanding of each other in such a way to be a constructive contribution to live in South Africa.
Personal contact with pupils
St George's College is building its own fine tradition and history of success comparable to any other school in Port Elizabeth. As society changes, new skills and ideas are required. We are developing fresh approaches to learning and teaching. The curriculum of the school will remain broad and balanced, but it will also include customized learning pathways which develop the full potential of every pupil.
We will build up the confidence of our learners by taking their previous achievements as our starting point and then set ambitious but realistic targets for all subjects they study. We will be firm in our insistence on a code of conduct which stresses the right of every student to learn in an orderly and purposeful classroom. This will provide an ideal foundation for a successful career as a business manager, skilled worker, academic or member or a profession.
The Ethos of the school
The ethos of the school is underpinned by values. We recognise the multi-faith aspect of our school community, and so all learners are encouraged to appreciate and develop their own faiths and to respect the faiths of others more deeply.
Society and Nation Building
Learners participate in community service that encourages them to show compassion for those in need and to be responsible citizens and effective decision makers.
A multicultural, non-racial and non-sexist learning environment
A learning environment in which all members of our diverse community are encouraged to understand, accept and respect each other to foster hope for the future.
The School Community
The school community is one in which there is a commitment to a shared vision, effective communication, respect and courtesy in order to form a basis for the partnership between parents, learners, educators, management and support staff.
Holistic Education
Holistic education is one that develops the spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual and physical potential of the learner by developing life skills and fostering growth of the individual and the community through the academic, extramural and other elements of the school curriculum.
Personal success and educational excellence
The notion of personal success and educational excellence refers to the potential of each child being reached academically, extramurally and spiritually. It also refers to the dedication of our educators and parents to providing educational resources and support so that our learners develop a love of learning.
Learner-centered education
Learner-centered education focuses on the individual's needs and abilities, and allows diversity to be recognised within a spirit of discipline.
